Details about the Sanding Tool For Difficult Areas and why we rejected it!

We noticed an ad in the Investments Wanted section of a local newspaper for a unique, hand-held woodworking tool that was advertised as being useful for reaching very difficult "V" and rounded groove areas that were otherwise impossible to reach for sanding. We called the inventor, who sent us a sample of the tool. It was indeed extremely handy and a model of simplicity.

The inventor had set up his own company to make the tooling, injection molds, assembly jigs, etc., but he had a large inventory left and had given up trying to market the product. He had learned that just because you have a good product, that does not mean that the world will beat a path to your door to buy it.

With this invention, he had entered into the real world of product marketing, needing point-of-sale displays, bar coding, J-hooking, advertising allowances, discounting, seasonal buying, slotting allowances, spiffs, sales rep commissions, etc., which he had neither the experience nor the temperament to deal with - and which are absolutely necessary if you are going to market your own product. This inventor, even after knowing that he couldn't sell the tooling, still wanted too much up-front money and too high a royalty percentage to have any money left in the product to be able to sell it at a retail price acceptable to the consumer.

Lesson learned: Most inventors don't realize that you must "cover all bases" when marketing your own product. One weak link in the chain, and the product will not get into distribution.

General Notes:
*We only work with a very few, highly selected products at one time.
*There is no cost to the inventor unless we produce results!
